Ed over Heels - 5

The bell rung and it was time for the last period: Chemistry. This time I found the room alone, since Lee had run off with May, probably to scold her for going against our mother. When I arrived in the lab everyone was already paired up. Rolf to Johnny, Nazz to Kevin, Ed to Eddy and Lee to May. All that left was Double D, nervous as he always was around me and trembling in his very chair. I still sat next to him, keeping my distance across the table and not wanting to cause him any more distress. "Class, I am Mr. Betzen." Our teacher introduced. "On each of your tables are two notebooks donated to you by the school. These shall be your lab notebooks for the year. Please write you name on the outside and inside of one and copy the table of contents enclosed inside." He instructed from behind his desk. The class obeyed, pencils scratching on paper hastily.
"Do you like chemistry?" I asked Double D. He was silent for a time, but finally spoke.
"Y-yes." He stuttered. "Very much so."
"I've never liked it myself, too much math if you ask me." I stuck out my tongue and grimaced to show the truth behind my words. "But the explosions make it worth while."
"Oh dear." He mumbled to himself, looking over at Ed and Eddy. They were dealing with their own problems as Lee bombarded them with spitballs. Poor May sat there, not knowing what to so.
"Doesn't she ever stop?" I asked myself. "About time she grew up." I shook my head, turning back to Double D. "I feel sorry for Eddy sometimes, my older sister can be more than clingy." Double D had his nose in a book, trying to pretend he couldn't hear me. I took it out of his hands and laid it down. "I'm talking to you." I raised an eyebrow.
"I-I'm sorry Marie." He flinched. I gave an exasperated sigh. I shouldn't have done that.
"Yeah well, I'd like you to talk too you know." I huffed. He was shocked.
"T-talk?" He repeated.
"Yeah smart-ass, talk. You do it plenty when I'm not around." I peered at him sarcastically. He seemed to swallow his own throat in nervousness.
"My, well. I don't know what to say..." He was trying to get out of this one, but I had suffered enough abuse for the day to let this opportunity slip by.
"Hey, stay still." I told him. He froze. "Stay like that, alright? I'm gonna try to draw you." I turned to the last page of the notebook and started to trace the outline of his profile. He turned to see what I was doing. "I said don't move!" I grabbed his chin and set him straight. His skin was as hot as a griddle and wet as a rainy day. Poor guy was worse off than I had thought. When I had finished I ripped it out and admired it. "Not half bad." I told myself. "Look." I held it up to show him. Lee had always said it was the stupid, weak girls who drew. Well since I knew I was already screwed when I got home, I might as well get even deeper in the muck I was finding myself in. His eyes looked over the paper, darting and wide. "It's not going to bite." I joked, taking it back to my side of the table and returning his book back to him. "Just go on to your geek-stuff." I waved him off to his relief and hunched over the paper so he couldn't see it. I scribbled a note on it, asking him to meet me outside under the high school peach tree. I folded the paper and placed it on the page he was currently reading to get his attention. Obediently, he read it and turned red as a cardinal. I looked up at the clock and found school to be nearly over. I could feel the butterflies in my stomach as I went through all the wonderful things that could happen if I could finally get a chance to talk to him. If I could finally just tell him how I'd felt and how I'd never been able to express it before with Lee stopping me.
